UNIT 4: HEALTH AND WELLNESS
My name‿ is Victor. Four years‿ ago I was thoroughly sedentary an(d) defended‿ it with the assertion│ that Ithad I had no time,│ which was‿ a rationalisation rather than‿ a reason,│ since‿ I could‿ invariably locate ninetynine-dy minutes for‿ a screen.
What‿ I have learned‿ is that‿ adherence‿ outweighs‿ intensity. My firs(t) month produced‿ almos(t) nothing physiologically,│ yet‿ it‿ established‿ a habit,│ an(d) the habit was the entire difficulty. The secon(d) lesson‿ arrived courtesy of‿ an‿ injury:│ I tore‿ a muscle by loading weight prematurely,│ an(d) my back then warned me for‿ a year that form‿ is not‿ optional. Since then‿ I warm‿ up,│ I treat recovery as part‿ of the programme,│ and‿ I accept‿ a plateau instead‿ of‿ attempting to force my way through it. Sustainable defeats‿ optimal‿ on‿ every occasion that matters.
The evidence‿ on‿ outcomes‿ is reasonably unambiguous,│ though the correlation between‿ exercise‿ an(d) mood‿ is harder to demonstrate than‿ enthusiasts suggest. What strikes me is that compliance‿ is highest‿ among those for│ whom‿ exercise‿ is‿ a fixed‿ appointmen(t) rather than‿ a daily decision,│ which‿ implies that the whole question concerns design rather than willpower. So I should‿ advise‿ anybody beginning now to mitigate the two obvious failure points:│ select‿ a time you cannot move│ an(d) fin(d) somebody│ who notices│ whether you attended. Motivation‿ is‿ unreliable,│ and‿ it‿ is‿ a poor foundation for‿ anything you inten(d) still to be doing‿ in January,│ when the resolutions have quietly expired.
