UNIT 4: HEALTH AND WELLNESS
My name‿ is Victor. Four years‿ ago I was thoroughly sedentary an(d) defended‿ it with the claim│ that Ithad I had no time,│ which was‿ a rationalisation rather than‿ a reason,│ as‿ I could‿ always find ninetynine-dy minutes for‿ a screen.
What‿ I have learned‿ is that‿ adherence matters more than‿ intensity. My firs(t) month produced‿ almos(t) nothing physiologically,│ but‿ it‿ established‿ a habit,│ an(d) the habit was the entire difficulty. The secon(d) lesson came from‿ an‿ injury:│ I tore‿ a muscle by loading weight too soon,│ an(d) my back then warned me for‿ a year that form‿ is not‿ optional. Since then‿ I warm‿ up,│ I treat recovery as part‿ of the programme,│ and‿ I accept‿ a plateau instead‿ of trying to force through it. Sustainable beats‿ optimal,│ every time.
The evidence‿ on‿ outcomes‿ is fairly unambiguous,│ although the correlation between‿ exercise‿ an(d) mood‿ is harder to demonstrate than‿ enthusiasts claim. What strikes me is that compliance‿ is highest‿ among people for│ whom‿ exercise‿ is‿ a fixed‿ appointmen(t) rather than‿ a decision,│ which suggests the whole question‿ is one‿ of design rather than willpower. So I would‿ advise‿ anybody starting now to mitigate the two obvious failure points:│ choose‿ a time you cannot move,│ an(d) fin(d) somebody│ who notices│ whether you turned‿ up. Motivation‿ is‿ unreliable,│ and‿ it‿ is‿ a poor foundation for‿ anything you inten(d) to keep doing‿ in January.
