UNIT 7: SPORTS
My name‿ is Julia. My son‿ is nine‿ an(d) plays‿ in‿ a children's team,│ and‿ I have been surprised by how early the pressure begins.
Coaches talk‿ about talent‿ identification‿ at‿ eight,│ an(d) some parents behave‿ as│ if‿ a professional career depends‿ on the decisions‿ of‿ a nine-year-old. Specialisation‿ is‿ encouraged too early,│ even though the research‿ on‿ injury an(d) burnout suggests the opposite. My son trains twice‿ a week,│ an(d) one father‿ at‿ our club has his child‿ in three sports,│ five times‿ a week. That boy dropped‿ out‿ in March. The dropout rate‿ in youth spor(t) rises sharply at fourteen,│ and‿ it‿ is not│ because children stop‿ enjoying movement;│ it‿ is│ because‿ it has stopped being theirs.
What‿ I wan(t) from youth sport‿ is‿ inclusion rather than‿ excellence. The children│ who will never be athletes‿ are the ones│ who will benefit mos(t) from‿ a habit‿ of participation,│ an(d) they are precisely the ones‿ a competitive system pushes‿ out. My daughterdau-der swims│ once‿ a week‿ an(d) will never compete. If she keeps swimming‿ at fortyfor-dy,│ that will be a betterbe-der return‿ on the investmen(t) than‿ a medal‿ at twelve│ an(d) nothing‿ afterwards.
