UNIT 6: SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE INTERNET
My name‿ is Rose. Two years‿ ago I shared‿ a story about‿ a celebrity that was‿ entirely fabricated,│ an(d) my friends believed‿ it│ because‿ I had shared‿ it. That‿ is how misinformation works:│ it travels through trust,│ not through evidence.
The mechanism‿ is not mysterious. Fabricated stories‿ are more‿ exciting than‿ accurate‿ ones,│ so they are shared faster,│ and‿ algorithmic‿ amplification rewards whatever produces‿ engagement,│ regardless‿ of│ whether‿ it‿ is true. Corrections,│ by contrast,│ are boring‿ and‿ arrive late. A study I read suggested that‿ a false story reaches fifteen hundred people‿ in the time‿ a correction takes to reach one,│ which sounds‿ extreme│ until you watch‿ it happen.
What‿ I check now is straightforward:│ credibility of the source,│ whether the headline‿ is manipulating me,│ an(d) the date. What worries me is that most‿ adults have never been taught verification,│ while their children‿ are being taught‿ it‿ at school. Media literacy is the only defence that scales,│ because fact-checking‿ organisations cannot possibly keep‿ up with the volume. If‿ a story makes you feel‿ instantly certain,│ that certainty is the firs(t) thing to examine.
