UNIT 5: WORK AND CAREER
My name‿ is Paul. I spen(t) four years‿ in‿ a call centre,│ an(d) the problems there were structural rather than personal,│ which‿ is why I no longer believe that‿ individual‿ attitude can solve‿ a workplace.
The wage was low an(d) stagnant:│ in four years‿ it‿ increased by three percent,│ while the cost‿ of living rose by eleven. Turnover was‿ enormous,│ an(d) managemen(t) treated‿ it‿ as‿ an‿ attitude problem rather than‿ a symptom. Work was precarious,│ breaks were cancelled,│ an(d) the grievance procedure‿ existed‿ on paper‿ an(d) nowhere‿ else. The union was the only body that produced‿ any change‿ at alladall,│ an(d) collective bargaining won‿ us fifteen minutes per shift. It was not much,│ and‿ it was more than four years‿ of‿ individual complaints.
I resigned,│ and‿ I now work‿ in‿ a smaller company│ where the work-life balance‿ is genuinely respected. However,│ I am‿ aware│ that my improvemen(t) was‿ a personal‿ escape rather than‿ a solution. If regulation‿ allows‿ an‿ employer to schedule somebody on Sunday an(d) replace them‿ on Monday,│ some‿ employers will do exactly that,│ an(d) the answer‿ is not betterbe-der colleagues‿ or‿ a positive mindset. It‿ is‿ enforcement.
