UNIT 4: HEALTH AND WELLNESS
My name‿ is Victor. Four years‿ ago I was completely sedentary:│ I drove to work,│ sat for nine‿ hours,│ an(d) defended my lifestyle by claiming│ that Ithad I had no time. It took‿ a minor health scare‿ and‿ a colleague's‿ invitation to a gym to change that.
What‿ I learned‿ is that consistency matters far more than‿ intensity. My firs(t) month was‿ almos(t) pointless‿ in physical terms,│ but‿ it‿ established‿ a regime,│ an(d) the regime turned‿ out to be the whole difficulty. Injuries taught me the secon(d) lesson:│ recovery is training. I tore‿ a muscle by loading too much weight too soon,│ an(d) my back warned me for‿ a year that form‿ is not‿ optional. Since then‿ I warm‿ up,│ I stretch,│ and‿ I have learned to accept‿ a plateau instead‿ of pushing through it.
Now I exercise five times‿ a week,│ mostly because my stamina is betterbe-der than‿ it was‿ at thirtythir-dy. What‿ I would say to somebody starting today is that motivation‿ is‿ unreliable‿ an(d) should not be relied‿ upon. What works‿ is‿ a sustainable plan,│ a fixed time,│ an(d) somebody│ who notices│ if you are‿ absent. Exercise‿ is not‿ a punishmen(t) for what youwhatcha ate;│ it‿ is the only investmen(t) that pays‿ interest‿ in the currency of your‿ own body.
