UNIT 10: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
My name‿ is Ben,│ and‿ I have had‿ a virtual reality headset for two years. My brother gave‿ it to me for Christmas,│ an(d) the firs(t) time‿ I put itpudit‿ on‿ I fel(t) dizzy│ after ten minutes. Now I can use‿ it for‿ an‿ hour without‿ any problem.
The most‿ interesting uses‿ are not games. My nephew's school bought twelve headsets,│ an(d) he visited‿ a museum‿ in Paris,│ walked through an‿ ancient cityci-dy,│ an(d) practised his Spanish‿ in‿ a simulation‿ of‿ a market‿ in Madrid. Pilots‿ an(d) surgeons‿ also train‿ in VR,│ because‿ a mistake costs nothing‿ in‿ a simulation. My company uses‿ it for remote meetings,│ and‿ although it feels strange to sit‿ at‿ a table with seven‿ avatars,│ the discussion was‿ easier than‿ a video call.
In my opinion,│ VR will not replace real‿ experience. A virtual holiday is not‿ a holiday,│ and‿ a virtual dinner‿ is not dinner. What‿ it will replace‿ is some training‿ an(d) some travel that people cannot‿ afford. My brother‿ asked me│ if‿ I would buy a headset for my children. I said not│ yet,│ because they are still quite young,│ and‿ a realistic simulation‿ is not good for‿ a six-year-old. Everything‿ in the right‿ amount.
