UNIT 9: TRAVELING AND CULTURE
My name‿ is Grace,│ and‿ I studied history,│ so historical sites‿ are my holidays. Las(t) spring‿ I visited‿ a temple‿ in the mountains that was built‿ in the thirteenth century,│ and‿ it‿ is now a protected heritage site.
The ruins‿ are‿ impressive,│ but what‿ I remember most‿ is the guide. He explained how the temple was buil(t) without machines,│ why the walls leaned,│ an(d) how the site was left‿ in ruins for four hundred years│ until‿ a local teacher started to restore‿ it with volunteers. The entrance fee is‿ only three dollars,│ and‿ it pays for the workers.
My brother prefers‿ a modern landmark:│ the tower‿ in‿ our cityci-dy centre,│ which was finished‿ in 1889. He says‿ ol(d) stones‿ are boring. I disagree,│ but Ibud I understan(d) that‿ a site has tohasta be explained to be interesting. That‿ is why I think restoration‿ and‿ interpretation matterma-der‿ as much‿ as the building‿ itself. If we preserve‿ a place│ but tell nobody its story,│ in fiftyfif-dy years‿ it will be only a wall‿ and‿ a ticket‿ office.
