UNIT 5: WORK AND CAREER
My name‿ is‿ Omar,│ an(d) my older brother‿ is‿ a firefighter. He works 24-hour shifts│ an(d) he is‿ on call one weekend‿ a month. When the alarm goes‿ off,│ he has tohasta be in the truck within ninetynine-dy seconds.
His job‿ is dangerous,│ an(d) he knows‿ it. Two years‿ ago,│ he was‿ injured‿ in‿ a fire‿ in‿ a warehouse,│ an(d) he could not work for three months. The protective clothing saved his back│ but not his shoulder. He is highly trained:│ every month there‿ is‿ a new course,│ from rescue techniques to medical care. People say firefighters‿ are brave,│ an(d) they are,│ but most‿ of what they do is planning│ an(d) practice.
The pay is not bad,│ but‿ it‿ is not generous‿ either. My brother says the job‿ is rewarding for‿ other reasons:│ when you carry a child‿ out ofoutta‿ a building,│ no salary compares with that. My friend‿ also does‿ a dangerous job:│ she dives to repair pipes‿ under the sea. It‿ is well paid,│ an(d) she is‿ away from home two weeks‿ a month. I could not do either job. I am‿ afraid‿ of fire│ and‿ I hate cold waterwa-der,│ so I will stay in my office.
